「家出した夫がヒジュラとして帰宅」

世界びっくりニュースにロイター発以下のニュース。

失業中だったナビウラーさんは妻と口論した後、2003年夏にウッターパラデッシュ州北部の自宅を出て職探しに向かったのが始まりだった。

家出をしている間に、ナビウラーさんは去勢し、唄って踊って金を稼いだ。去勢した男性はインドでは仲間はずれになり、唄って踊ることで職を得るのはよくあることだ。

「私は昔から、唄ったり踊ったりするのが好きでした。でも、自分が男でいることが息苦しくてしょうがなかったのです」とナビウラーさんは語ったという。

彼の妻シャーマ・パルビーンさんは、夫が先月末に帰宅したとき、失神してしまった。今では離婚を求めている。

「去勢した男と一緒に暮らすなんてできません。子どもも私も社会から笑いものになるんです」と語った。

しかし原文を読むと、微妙にニュアンスが違う。

つまりタイトルが
「Absent husband returns home ... as a eunuch」（「家出した夫がeunuchとして帰宅」
であるし、
家出中
「he was castrated and became a eunuch,」（去勢しeunauchとなった）
妻も
「I cannot live with this eunuch」（eunuchとは一緒に住めない）
というコメントだ。
eunauchは一般的には「宦官」の意味だが、ここではヒジュラをさすと思われる。
ヒジュラはインドでは男でも女でもないし、社会的にもある種枠外におかれている。

であるから、、
「性同一性障害の夫が女性に性転換して帰宅したのがいや」
という日本人的理解は不正確で、
「夫が去勢してヒジュラになって帰宅したのがいや」
という理解の方が正確であろう。
もっとも、インドでは、性同一性障害とか、性転換して男性が女性になるという概念は乏しく、もっぱら男性がヒジュラになるという選択・概念しかないのかもしれないが。
